I have to ask but WTF is going on in this country????

Bubba... Sometimes when you put your heart and soul into your convictions you wonder whether your making progress. Your actions are a reflection of what so many many others support. I pray you will have the strength to continue your work supporting this and other causes dealing with the honor of our military. Trust me .. we are watching and we will be voting... There will be day of reckoning.

Bubba, I believe that you are right in your assessment of the present situation. I am ashamed to say that it was my generation (the 60's) that started this. Up until this time the motto was "GOD, Family, and Country". The youth of the 60's generation rebelled not only against their parents (as youth usually do); they also rebelled against ALL authority. They have since passed this rebellion down to the following generations. Since the present generations don't believe in GOD, think this country is corrupt and immoral, and have not been taught to take responsibility for anything they do; there is no surprise that we are in the situation we are today. Be aware that I am NOT indicting ALL of the people in the generations following the 60's but I am saying that a great number of them (most now in education and politics) are at fault.
What will change it? ONLY a return to the values that made this country great in the past.
How does this take place? At this moment, I do NOT see the light at the end of the tunnel. Without a complete overhaul (read this to be revolution) of the government and the education system we can not get back to the path the forefathers started us on. I pray every day that I am wrong.

WHO ARE THE A--HOLES RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS? THESE MEN SHOULD BE GIVEN MEDALS

We are a nation of great men. We need to take back the leadership of this country from these absolutely sorry, pathetic people.

The Navy Seals need to have people worthy to command them. At the top, at least, they most certainly don't.

Nothing but prayer can save this country now. Pray daily, people. When it comes to this, no one can mistake the depth of moral rot that has overtaken this once-great republic. Help us, Lord!

This is a beautiful article. You have summed the situation up wonderfully. I think some other people have it right-- if they had simply killed him there would be no court martial, they did what they had to do. But since they showed class and restraint our delightful government is honoring them with a triple-court-martial-hearing/trial. Beautiful. I hope our government is ashamed at what they are doing to these fine young men.

This whole thing really hits home with me. As the father of a SEAL currently serving overseas, I look at these pictures through tears in my eyes and say this could be my son! The SEAL community is like family and all Patriotic Americans are part of that family. Thank you the support you have shown these brave young defenders of freedom!

Our forefathers were in the same place we find ourselves in today. We have been so blessed by our Judeo/Christian heritage that greed, materialism,has become our god. As a Vietnam Vet I hang my head and wonder what the hell has gone wrong with my military. When cmmanding officers care more about their careers and bow to political PC then for the troops who have sworn to follow them into battle I question the current military leadership. If America allowed this case to continue I say to all, bring back the national draft and lets fight our wars, "Fair & Balanced", these troops fight so others may continue to sit at the mall and this is unacceptable to consider them the same as a street police officer while in a combat zone, That bird will not fly.

I am a vietnam vet (101st)and I think this is terrible. However, some are blaming President Obama. He had nothing to do with this. Ask the pirates in Somalia if he is weak. The way you get things done is to do what was being done. Leave politics out of it left or right. Civil rights marches did more for minorities than calling the president of the country names. I am outraged that the charges against these 3 SEAL heroes were ever even filed. I have contacted my entire facebook friend list plus my personal email contact list with information, the petition url, and pictures of the Blackwater guards' being hung from the bridge. I can't imagine anyone with a conscience being able to turn their backs on this situation. I think if Obama doesn't step in as commander and chief and drop this nonsense he should be impeached for giving aid and comfort to the enemy.

I wish someone would explain the rules of WAR to me, again.

A 'fat lip' compared to the atrocities that are brought on our patriots on a daily basis who are there to do their jobs.

Our men and women, our patriots, are fighting for their lives daily. They capture a known war criminal and terrorist, and instead of disposing of him, bring him in 'alive' to face civilized justice. The certified terrorist got a 'fat lip' in the process. And now, the government wants to prosecute the patriots who brought him in to stand trial for his war crimes.

Someone please explain the Rules of WAR to me again. The rules have changed since I returned from Viet Nam in 1972 (Air Support, SAC, B-52 ground crew). The way all Viet Nam Vets were treated post-WAR was atrocious, me included. Many Vets were ostracized, humiliated and abandoned by the government who sent them to do a job...the job of WAR. Even now, many years after that time, I cannot understand our Rules of WAR.

I support the efforts to stop the madness going on at Norfolk against the three Marine patriots who did their job to bring a known war criminal and terrorist to justice. If this terrorist got a fat lip in the process, so be it! This minor scratch is nothing compared to the terrorist action he perpetrated upon our patriots over there.

It makes me wonder if our patriots currently fighting will change the fervor they currently have to do their jobs if they even think that they will become the targets, and possibly penalized after returning home for what they do to fight the fight. Possibly making them second guess an action while doing their jobs, and therefore, putting themselves further in harms way.

I am retired navy. I served on ships and with navy cb units. I am sick at the thought of what the navy has started to be. We have more and more capt and cdr being relived of command and now we are going to court martial the bravest of the brave. My grandson will start navy seal training in a few weeks. is the way he will be treated. GOD i hope not.

has anyone taken the time to research the army general and his subordinate master at arms that are behind this? someone in the VA. Beach area take up this task.

I know the risks we take to get these criminals off the street. I served in al-Anbar 06-07 and faced many of the same challenges. Snatching violent criminals at great risk to ourselves and having the detainees level charges of abuse at us. These criminals know our system and its serious flaws. Validating the "complaints" of mistreatment while securing armed, murdering, lawless animals using the proper escalation of force with official charges sickens me. We don't hammer police officers who use the force required to bring in armed criminals, but a soldier at war will be charged and held accountable for a few bruises. Apparently it is the murderers who have rights not the victims - our "bleeding hearts" have it backwards. This type of behaviour gives power to those who wish to take our freedoms. I pray this Court Martial does the right thing. - a Team Guy

Hello, I was referred to this site. I had heard about this on radio talk shows and now reading more online and up here.

While reading I had also stumbled across this pesky Constitution our country was founded on. Amazingly enough I found within it another pesky Amendment, the 5th. Most consider or think of this as "oh that’s the one I use to keep from incriminating myself in court" Well read the whole Amendment mainly and amazingly the first sentence.

No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the Militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger;

How are these SEALs being held? We are in a time of declared war.

Now the painful part is that in the military courts and crimes don't work the same as civil courts and crimes(ie a cop hitting a prisoner) but even the Geneva Convention, to which NONE of the people we are fighting follow yet we do, does state for prisoners

"willfully causing great suffering or serious injury to body or health"

So is a split lip now considered "serious injury to body or health"?

A Courts Martial although sounding horrible, and usually for the people involved is, but something that must be done especially during a high profile issues like this. NORMALLY handled by a superior officer LONG before a courts-martial, but the media got ahold if it and everyone went into CYA mode.

Hopefully during this Courts-Martial the ruling would be :
#1 Tossed out completely due to WHO is stating what happened, all pay and grade restored.
#2 They get a slap on the wrist, maybe a salary deduction and base confinement (not really as bad as it sounds) (back in my day it was an Article 15 and up to the superior officer to decide how bad you got punished).
why would this occur? If the alleged injuries happened and were not immediately reported and documented. I believe I read/heard this was done, if so, then this should be no different than reporting a hmmv was damaged before signing it out and NOTED before accepting usage of the item. BUT only if reported PRIOR to signing for it. ie: don’t report it was damaged when you drop off the vehicle saying it was already damaged and you missed it. Basically, you signed for it and didn't document it, so now it’s your fault. Sorry but true and I unfortunately DID have to make soldiers pay for broken parts because they didn’t' follow the OUTLINED SOPs. This would be no different.

Sorry for rambling: in short, if you accepted the prisoner (as is) and didn't report/document injuries during the capture or subsequent pickup, it becomes your fault.

If this DID happen, and they didn't inflict the injuries after capture BUT also didn't report them during pickup, it is a punishable offense but the panel should see that and set the punishment based on this.

Sorry to be the devil’s advocate :( I do completely support these brave men, IF they unfortunately missed a step during processing of this prisoner, which I am sure MANY people would do under the circumstances, they are SEALS not prison guards and if they were unaware that "you must document if the prisoner was mistreated or appear to have been after drop off for holding later pickup" then someone higher in the chain of command needs raked over the coals for not teaching this to them.

#3 The media completely influences the Courts-Martial Panel. Not a good thing, but since the prisoner was not “dispatched” and only apparently and allegedly punched, I would find it hard to believe they get more than the full article 15, lots of pay withheld, loss of rank, confined to quarters, but I doubt any prison time? BUT that all depends on if they are influenced by the media. I truly doubt they would be kicked out with a DD.

#4 Either or Both, Senators or Congressmen get involved and get this taken care of properly(ie: TOSSED OUT), but they are more worried about their own elections. Not holding my breathe on this one.

I find it so amazing that the idiotic media believes a TERRORIST WOULD LIE ABOUT HIS CAPTURES? This piece of garbage mutilated people and all the media care about is he got a BOOBOO? What about those poor men this garbage slaughtered and paraded around?

I couldn't agree more with the previous posts! This is an Outrage! And, I want to know what we can do about it...we can write our thoughts in this column...but that doesn't help our beloved Navy Seals!

I retired from the Real Navy in 1976. At that time almost any senior officer I knew would have offered to resign or retire before being a part of this farce. I guess it is true that CYA is more important that Honor, Loyalty, and taking care of your troops. I'm glad I'm out of it! I hate to say it but I am ashamed of my Navy.

Why are terrorist prisoners getting civil trials and not our own men? When I retired I would have much preferred a Court Martial to a civil court if brought to a trial. NOT ANY MORE!

I am a 52 yr old woman and that SOB should be grateful that it wasn't me that caught him. He would have had a hell of a lot more than a "fat lip". He might not have made it to anywhere anyone could have found him. This man who basically saved his life by not killing him on the spot like he deserved should be given a medal, not a trial.

How long is it going to take people in this country to realize we mean nothing to our elected officials and those that they appointed. All I can say is I'll never know what it is like to wear the uniform, but I do know that the Navy Seals will do a job that 99% of the population can't do and we should respect and honor them. If we can survive the 60's again, America will be just fine. Once the me, me, me, spoiled, entitled, brainwashed with "Mao is great" mentality is gone, and they are out of our politics, out of our legal system and out of our schools, we will be "free at last, free at last", God Almighty, we will be free at last. I am praying, not "hoping", for that each day, and that these scum are moved out of our country any which way possible (Murtha's gone-Kennedy's gone) and it's coming quicker than we think!!!

To compare the individuals, responsible for the treatment of our military to A-H---s, would be a complement. It is no secert who they are and what direction they are attempting to take this nation. It far past time for them, those and they to be held accountable for their destruction of our America and our Constitution, that all gave some and some gave all so that we, as Americans, can have the Nation of Freedom that our founding fathers intended us to have. If they take praise the way of life of the Socialism and Communism why the hell do they not pack their bags and get the hell out of our America. I sure there is one of the said countries that would be willing to greet they with loaded arms.

I would like to know what the outcome of this incident, the same thing is happening to Australian soldiers.
It's interesting to know that when the politicians stuff up they send in the troops to clean up their mess. Should there be any incidents the same politicians are ready to victimise the troops while at the same time they stand before the cameras and proclaim their undying support. I suppose this makes them feel good, I'm willing to bet that none of their families are sent to the battle front.

That is certainly some inspirational stuff. By no means realized that opinions might be this varied.
